Ingrid Murphy, Dr. Jon Pigott
The Ceramophone is a collaborative work between Ingrid Murphy and Jon Pigott, in which a 1940’s gramophone is used to play a series of lustred decorated plates.
Viewers are invited to ‘play a plate’ and the gramophone uses two optical styluses to read the pattern on the plate, producing a percussive sound accompanied by synchronised flashing lights. The original gramophone loudspeakers are exposed and filled with gold lustred ceramic balls which bounce and rattle in response to the clicking percussive patterns.
